Cupcakes!

Today our neighborhood is having a block party (I know-adorable, right?). So I took the opportunity to make some cupcakes!  I really wanted to use the occasion to practice my fondant skills, so I originally thought of making "hello naomi" style cupcakes...  But it didn't seem very "block party-ish".  So then I thought of making fondant pictures of everyone's homes...  But those weren't very cute.  My final thought was that fondant's not all that tasty, so maybe I'll keep it a little more simple.  So here's what I ended up with:

and:

The top cupcakes are lime with cream cheese frosting (recipe found here), and the bottom cupcakes are orange creamsicle cupcakes with orange buttercream and marshmallow fluff frosting (recipe found here).  The lime and orange slices are made from fondant, using a polymer clay method.  I have been playing around with this idea for a little while, thinking some of the cool things people do with polymer clay could be done with fondant... The only difference is that sometimes the color differences aren't quite as sharp in fondant as they may be in polymer clay.  I haven't seen too much of this technique used in cake decorating, but I think it's a fun idea...  The only time I've seen this used (and honestly, I can't promise that this is how she did this) is by Fantasticakes.  Check out the mice's clothes in this cake.  Anyways, off to my block party!  Have a happy weekend all!
